A disease is considered rare when it affects less than 1 in 2,000 people. There are around 7,000 such diseases, affecting 3 million people in France. But most of these diseases are still shrouded in secrecy: the cause of more than half of them is unknown, which compromises the search for treatments, and 95% of rare diseases remain untreated to this day.
“Le Monde” will publish an article on rare diseases, in collaboration with Daniel Schermann, Director of the Fondation des Maladies rares, on 01/03/2023.
